Three children, three lists, one extended family

The Klein family has three children. At Christmas grandparents from both sides come, two godmothers and an uncle – six adults shopping for three children and not coordinating with each other. Until now that ran on phone calls in November.

Christmas is the one occasion on this site where it is not one list being shared but several at the same time. And that makes a feature important which otherwise only appears in passing: that you can follow somebody else's list.

Why here of all places

The problem is not the list but the housekeeping

At a wedding there is one link. At Christmas there are three, and they sit in some message from four weeks ago.

Three links in three messages: In December the grandmother looks for November's message. That is exactly when she cannot find it
No overview: She no longer knows what she already took for the middle child, or whether the eldest has anything left
Following lists: One click on the list and it sits in her own customer account under "lists I follow". After that she needs no link
Automatically: Whoever has bought something once follows the list by themselves. That is the case that works without any effort

For the family the gain is that nobody has to make phone calls any more. For you as the shop it is the second visit: an account that comes back next year.

Every child has a list of its own with its own display name. Here is an extract across all three, as a grandmother sees it in her account.

The states count separately per list. What is taken for Emma says nothing about Jonas – and the grandmother still sees all three on one page in her account.

What this occasion turns on

December is the month when deadlines count

Two default values that fit all year do not fit in December.

A purchase counts from order status: Shipping takes longer. If the status is set too late, a wish stays in limbo for weeks although it was paid for long ago
Reservation deadline: More generous as well, as long as payment in advance is involved. Otherwise the reservation expires before the money has arrived
What happens if both are too tight: The wish becomes free again, a second relative buys it, and it lies under the tree twice
The date: 24 December. After it the list accepts nothing more, and the thank-you reminder runs

A purchase counts from order status: In December set it earlier than usual
Reservation deadline: Longer, if your customers often pay in advance
Theme "Christmas": Not included, but quickly created: name, colour, icon
Surprise guard: Only if the children look into the account themselves. Otherwise it is superfluous here

Common questions

Can a customer have several gift registries?

Yes, any number. For a family with several children, one list per child is the usual way.

What does following a list mean?

You keep somebody else's list in your own account and do not have to save the link. After a gift order this happens automatically.

Do the children see what has already been bought?

Only if the parents allow it. With the surprise guard the activity shows that something was bought, but not what.

Is a shared family list worth it?

If the wishes are shared anyway, yes. Otherwise separate lists are clearer, because every guest gives for one particular person.

What should I watch out for with deadlines in December?

Shipping takes longer. An earlier order status for purchase detection and a longer reservation deadline stop wishes from staying blocked unnecessarily long.

Can wishes from other shops be on the list?

Yes, as a wish outside the shop, optionally with a link. A guest takes it over so that nobody gets it twice.
