Eighty guests, one date, one list

Max and Marie marry on 12 October. Eighty people want to give something, but they only partly know each other: relatives from both sides, colleagues, the circle of friends from university. Every one of them faces the same question, and none of them can talk it over with the others.

The wedding is the occasion gift registries were invented for. Nowhere else do so many givers meet one recipient, and nowhere else is the damage as visible when the coordination is missing.

Why here of all places

What happens without a list

Without a list a wedding goes wrong in three ways, and all three cost you as the shop real money.

Given twice
Two aunts buy the same toaster. One of them goes back – a return that is not a complaint and costs money all the same
Not given at all
The guest knows nothing and reaches for an envelope. The revenue happens nowhere, least of all with you
Given wrong
The right idea in the wrong colour, the wrong size, the wrong quantity. That is the return that comes most reliably
The address question
Whoever wants direct delivery has to give eighty people their address. Most couples do not and carry the parcels themselves instead

A gift registry resolves all four at once, and without anybody having to make a phone call. The state sits on the wish, the quantity adds up, the address stays hidden.

The list itself

Thirty-six wishes, a few of them more than once

This is the page behind the link on the invitation. An extract – the states sit on every wish, and they change the moment somebody buys.

Two rows say more than the others. The voucher, eight times at 50 € each, is the route by which money gifts run through your shop instead of into an envelope – every guest takes as many shares as they like. And the trees are not something you sell; they are on the list anyway, so that two guests do not both drive to the nursery.

What this occasion turns on

The date is not decoration

At a wedding almost everything hangs on a single date, and the plugin takes it seriously.

Before
The list counts the days down. Fourteen days before the date a mail reminds them of the wishes still open – that is the mail that brings in the latecomers
After
The list accepts no more gifts. Whoever tries anyway learns it in the cart, not after the order
The reservation
Expires if nobody buys. The wish becomes free again by itself instead of staying blocked until the wedding
The thank-you note
Three days after the date the shop reminds the couple. Thanks go through the shop, without addresses being exchanged

What you set up for it

Four places, then it fits

The defaults already carry this case. These four are worth setting deliberately.

A purchase counts from order status
Completed out of the box. With a lot of payment in advance, better earlier, otherwise a wish stays in limbo for a long time – see Setting up
Allow reserving
Gives guests time to talk to each other before they buy
Theme "wedding"
Gives the list a colour and a symbol so it looks like a celebration and not like a form
Gift options
Wrapping paper and a greeting card, for a surcharge if you want – at a wedding almost everybody takes them, and that is the extra revenue that happens nowhere else

What a guest sees on the page and how the cart behaves is in the chapter Gifting.

Common questions

How does a wedding registry work in your own online shop?

The couple creates a list in the customer account, picks a display name such as "Max & Marie", enters date and place and collects wishes from your range. They send the link with the invitation. Guests open it without an account, see at once what is still free, and buy directly.

How do the guests know what has already been given?

Because the list shows it. Every wish carries its state: available, partly taken, reserved or already given. As soon as an order reaches the configured order status, the wish disappears for everybody else.

Do the relatives get to see the couple's address?

No. Delivery goes straight to the couple, but the address is masked for the giver: they only see the display name of the list. The invoice and the cart show nothing else either.

What about guests who want to put money towards the honeymoon?

For that the couple enters a voucher from your range in a suitable denomination several times, eight times 50 € for instance. Every guest takes as many shares as they like. The money then runs through your shop instead of into an envelope.

Can two guests join forces?

Yes, through the quantity wished for. If a wish is on the list three times, every guest can take one of them; the list counts along and shows "1 of 3 still available".

What happens to the list after the wedding?

After the date it accepts no more gifts - the cart tells the guests so. The list stays in the account, and through the thank-you notes the couple thanks every giver without the two sides having to exchange e-mail addresses.

Can the list be for invited guests only?

Yes, with a password. The couple sends it together with the invitation; whoever opens the link without the password only sees an input field.
