Lotta is starting school, and everything has to be there before the cone is packed

Lotta starts school on Saturday, 21 August. The school sent a list of supplies: exercise books with ruling 1, triangular colouring pencils, a paint box with opaque white, book covers in five set colours. Grandma and grandpa, her godmother and two uncles want to contribute, and her parents pack the school cone on Friday evening.

That gives starting school two quirks. A third party, the school, decides what is right. And the list has to close before the celebration, not on the day itself.

Why here of all places

The school has a say

At other occasions a gift is right when the recipient likes it. When school starts it is right when it matches the school's list and arrives in time.

The list of supplies

Ruling, square size, triangular or round: an exercise book with the wrong ruling stays unused in the school bag on the first day

Five givers, one school cone

Without coordination two of them buy the same alarm clock, and the colouring pencils are missing altogether

The packing evening

The school cone is filled the evening before the first day. Whatever arrives after that is too late

The school bag

It is tried on at a specialist shop, not bought online. Nobody may get it twice all the same

For you as the shop, starting school is a fixed date that a whole year group has every year. A list that already carries the school's requirements brings the relatives into your shop instead of sending them off with a slip of paper.

The school bag is on the list without a price because it is tried on at a specialist shop. Grandma and grandpa have taken it on with "I'll get this", and nobody else buys one. The alarm clock is Lotta's own wish; on the list it carries "Especially wanted".

The date of the list is the last day to order

A list accepts gifts up to and including its date. At a wedding that is the big day. When school starts, everything has to be in the school cone beforehand, so the date comes earlier.

Lotta's parents enter Wednesday, 18 August, three days before school starts. That leaves two days for shipping before the packing evening

Description

This is where the real date goes, so that nobody mistakes the date of the list for the first day at school

In the seven days before the date the list shows "only … days left" at the top

After the date

From 19 August the list accepts nothing more. Anyone who still wants to order finds out in the cart, not after the order

Delivery goes "To me", so to the parents. Within the family the address is no secret; what counts is that everything arrives in one place and the parents pack the school cone themselves.

The school's requirements

Notes instead of phone calls

Without a note the godmother rings up and asks which ruling is meant. With a note the answer is right where she buys.

A field on the wish in the customer account, up to 255 characters. Room enough for "Ruling 1, with margin" plus the square size

On the list

The note shows as a quote under the wish, on the same card as the "Give this gift" button

Quantity

Five book covers in five colours are one wish with quantity 5. The list counts along and shows "3 of 5 available"

Priority

The wish that matters most to Lotta herself gets "High" and shows on the list as "Especially wanted"

Two reminders and adding extras

The parents write the list. Three places in your configuration decide how well it fits the start of school.

Event reminders

14 days before the date of the list by default. The email tells the parents how many wishes are still open, and they send the link round once more

Reserved wishes

Anyone who reserved a wish and has not bought it yet gets a reminder of their own in the same window. On by default

Allowing extra products

If you allow shop products next to gifts, the parents may switch it on for their list. Then grandma puts the sweets for the school cone into the same order

What the cart then shows

At the top the warning that the whole order goes to Lotta, and a note of its own on every extra product

Common questions

How does a gift list for starting school work?

The parents create a list in their customer account, enter the last day to order as the date and turn the school's list of supplies into wishes from your range, with quantity and note. Grandparents, godparents and relatives open the link, see what is still missing and buy directly. Delivery goes to the parents.

How do the school's requirements get onto the list?

Through the note on the wish. The parents write "Ruling 1, with margin" or "with opaque white" into the field "Note (optional)", up to 255 characters. On the list the note shows as a quote under the wish, exactly where the giver decides.

Until when can relatives give from the list?

Up to and including the date of the list. From the following day it accepts no more gifts, and the cart says so. If you pack the school cone the evening before school starts, set the date a few days before the first day and put the real date in the description.

Can grandma add something for the school cone that is not on the list?

Yes, if you allow shop products next to gifts and the parents tick "Let gift-givers add extra products" on their list. Then the whole order goes to the parents, and the cart points out every extra product. If one of the two ticks is missing, grandma orders it separately.

What about the school bag that is tried on at a specialist shop?

It goes on the list as a wish of its own, without a price and without a cart. Whoever buys it clicks "I'll get this" while logged in, after which the list shows "Already taken on". That way the grandparents on both sides do not each buy one.

Where are the gifts delivered?

With "To me", to the parents' address, which the giver does not get to see. Within the family the address is no secret. What counts here is something else: everything arrives in one place, and the parents pack the school cone themselves.
